Thrifty Tip Thursday

Cooking

Tip #1 - Faux San Marzano Tomatoes
These are very expensive canned tomatoes imported from Italy that are known for their fabulously sweet flavor.  Save yourself some $$$ by purchasing less expensive canned tomatoes on sale and drizzle them with a little bit of rice vinegar.  The taste is comparable and will keep your wallet happy.

Tip #2 - Air Curing Steaks
Dry-aged steaks are available at the nicest restaurants in the world.  Keep your cash and stay at home by using this frugal tip instead.  The day you plan to cook your steaks unwrap them and place them on a plate.  Sprinkle a small amount of salt on each steak and place in the fridge uncovered for up to 4 hrs.  When you are ready to cook, let the steaks come to room temp.  Great restaurant flavor for the cost of salt!!!

Tip #3 - Use Stale Bread
Don't throw away stale bread or bread crusts you cut off when your kids refuse to eat them.  Save them in a freezer bag in the fridge or freezer until you have enough to make homemade bread crumbs, croutons, or bread budding.  I save ALL my stale bread - french bread, sandwich bread and even buns.  Use the recipe HERE to make homemade croutons with herbs.

Tip #4 - Buy the WHOLE Chicken
When your grocery store has whole chickens on sale (under $1/lb is a decent price) take advantage of these savings.  Most grocery stores that have a meat/seafood counter will be happy to cut the chicken for you.  If you don't have this luxury go HERE for a quick and easy video on how to cut a chicken.   After you are done using your chicken, save the carcass and go HERE to make my homemade chicken stock.

Tip # 5 - Save at Ethnic Markets
Local ethnic grocery stores are a great way to save on your grocery bill.  I visit my local Asian market for sushi rice, soy sauce and miso soup that is significantly less expensive than my grocery stores.  Produce is usually less expensive at ethnic markets also.  I buy olive oil at World market since it runs about $ 5 - $7
on sale for a liter!
